Fun Story with Amazing Students
One of the best parts of my job being a language teacher is the moment that I was totally amazed and awed by my students. Here is a one to share.
One day we learned a new phrase“出门(chū mén)”, which means “leave home”. One of my students said when asked to give an example: 我(wǒ)今(jīn)天(tiān)早(zǎo)上(shang)七(qī)点(diǎn)出(chū)家(jiā)/I left home at 7am this morning。I said: we can’t say “出家(chū jiā)”,as it actually meant “become a monk”. ;-P
Later we learned another phrase“回家(huí jiā)”, which means “go home”. He then gave another example: 我(wǒ)今(jīn)天(tiān)晚(wǎn)上(shang)六(liù)点(diǎn)回(huí)门(mén)。I was really amazed how he expanded the phrase….but said: we can’t say “回(huí)门(mén)”,as it referred to a Chinese wedding tradition, "new bride returning home the first time after getting married”.
Truly amazing!
