打(dǎ)酱(jiàng)油(yóu)

In the past, all soy sauce was retailed piecemeal in China. People took a bottle to a shop themselves. The seller would dish out the required amount. This was called打(dǎ)酱(jiàng)油(yóu), buying soy sauce. Parents often sent their children out to buy soy sauce. Therefore, we are using this as a metaphor for the inevitable or passing of time: it reminds people that they are not young anymore. However, 打(dǎ)酱(jiàng)油(yóu), this practice no longer takes place in China. The phrase is now used by netizens when they wish not to comment, it seems like they know nothing about. It means "pass" or "It is none of my business". It has now become a popular internet phrase.

1.时间过得真快，小王的孩子都会打酱油了。
Shíjiān guòde zhēn kuài, Xiǎo Wáng de háizi dōu huì dǎ jiàngyóu le.
How time flies! XiaoWang's kid is able to buy soy sauce (He/She is not young anymore).
2. 别问我，我是打酱油的！
Bié wèn wǒ, wǒ shì lái dǎ jiàngyóu de.
Don’t ask me, I just passed by (I have no idea).
